The Nightmare Level system climbs the longer you stay inside a raid — more danger, harder enemies, nastier tile effects — so the question is never just “can I win this fight” but “should I even start it.”
When you do make it out alive, the base management side kicks in. You pull materials from defeated nightmares and use them to craft weapons that blend early 1900s gunwork with outright supernatural alchemy. Recruitable survivors join your roster, each needing ability investment and gear. Push a character’s fear meter too far and the monsters zero in on them fast, so you have to actually play the courage and dread system rather than just ignoring it. Extraction is your call, not the game’s — and that one design choice is what makes the whole loop feel different from a standard XCOM-style mission.
